NBOME

A Message from the President

John R. Gimpel, DO, MEd, FACOFP, FAAFP, President and CEO

Welcome to the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners.

The National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME), founded in 1934, is an independent, nongovernmental, not-for-profit organization with the mission of protecting the public by providing the means to assess competencies for osteopathic medicine and related health care professions. We work closely with key stakeholders to develop services and programs to meet the assessment needs of the state medical and osteopathic medical licensing boards, osteopathic medical students and physicians in residency training, practicing physicians, medical educators and colleges of osteopathic medicine, residency program directors, national professional organizations, and the national and international testing and medical licensure communities.

For over 80 years, the NBOME has been recognized for excellence in the national and the international arenas of assessment of osteopathic physicians and related health care professionals. Our Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX-USA) is the examination series universally accepted for osteopathic physician licensure in the United States. COMLEX-USA is recognized by the Federation of State Medical Boards, required for accreditation of DO-granting medical schools, and recognized by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Comprised of leading osteopathic physicians across the United States, and public, non-physician members, our Board of Directors provides strategic direction to a highly dedicated team of more than 200 professional staff members. The NBOME National Faculty, with expertise in assessment for the health professions, osteopathic medical practice, undergraduate and graduate medical education, and physician licensure and regulation, work with our staff to perform a wide array of duties for high-quality test development and delivery, standard setting, continuous quality improvement, innovations in testing, and research initiatives.

Driven by the clear vision of our Board and supported by teamwork across the NBOME and our partner organizations within the medical community, we are making great advances in new and existing competency assessment products and services. Our organization has realized these accomplishments with an unwavering commitment to our mission, based on our core values:

Patient Safety more_vert   Integritymore_vert   Accountabilitymore_vert   Excellence more_vert   Collaboration

In response to substantive changes in the evolution of osteopathic medical practice, and to ensure COMLEX-USA remains current in meeting the needs of state licensing boards, in July of 2017 the NBOME released the enhanced evidence-based COMLEX-USA Master Blueprint. The new blueprint is targeted for implementation with Level 3 examinations in September 2018, and with Levels 1 and 2 examinations in 2019. We are making significant enhancements to the testing experience, demonstrating our ongoing concern for candidates in this high-stakes environment.  These changes have generated very positive feedback.

In addition to COMLEX-USA, we develop and administer the COMAT series of achievement tests, the COMVEX examination for physician revalidation, and the COMSAE program for candidate self-assessment. We are proud to provide competency assessment services in partnership for many specialty colleges and certification boards, as well as other health professions, including the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and the National Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners (NBPME). As a recognized leader in continuous professional development, we offer in-practice assessment and improvement strategies for physicians, and other resources for osteopathic continuous certification and maintenance of certification, including the CATALYST platform for continuous assessment.

We know that the quality of health care in the United States, and the medical interactions and services that patients experience each day will continue to benefit from our progress and collaboration, helping to solidify public trust in the medical profession as a whole.

We hope you enjoy and learn from your visit to our website and invite you to return frequently to stay informed of our activities.

Sincerely,

John R. Gimpel, DO, MEd, FACOFP, FAAFP
