Who We Are
The National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME) is an independent, nongovernmental, not-for-profit organization whose mission is to protect the public by providing the means to assess competencies for osteopathic medicine and related health care professions.
Since our founding in 1934, we have been recognized for excellence in the national and international arenas of osteopathic physician testing and evaluation. We produce a number of osteopathically distinct examinations:
Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination of the United States: This multi-level series consists of three cognitive and one clinical performance evaluation. Successful completion of Levels 1, 2-CE and 2-PE is required to earn a DO degree from colleges of osteopathic medicine, for progression in graduate medical education, and for osteopathic physician licensure in the United States and internationally.
Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Self-Assessment Examination: These three-phase, online self-assessment examinations are designed for osteopathic students and residents wishing to gauge their knowledge and ability as they prepare to take one of the COMLEX-USA cognitive examinations.
Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Achievement Tests: This series, administered by osteopathic medical schools, meets the need for osteopathically distinctive subject examinations and enables students to demonstrate their knowledge and clinical problem-solving skills in numerous disciplines.
Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Variable-Purpose Examination: This examination builds on the assessment foundation of COMLEX-USA and is used by state medical and osteopathic boards for licensed or previously licensed osteopathic physicians in the United States to demonstrate up-to-date osteopathic medical competencies.
