About COMAT FBS for Non-DOs
The NBOME is now offering COMAT Foundational Biomedical Sciences (FBS) examinations to health profession programs at schools and colleges of osteopathic medicine (COMs). Those include but are not limited to master’s and doctoral level programs in biomedical sciences, podiatric medicine, physician assistant studies, dentistry, and optometry.
Exams will be available at no charge to COMs that participate in the COMAT program for eligible examinees through June 30, 2026.

COMs that currently administer COMAT FBS examinations to their DO students and would like to offer them to health professions students will be able to manage purchases, scheduling, proctors, administrators, and more in the Health Sciences Program Portal, accessible via the NBOME Portal.
COMAT FBS Comprehensive (FBS-C) and Targeted (FBS-T) examinations can be used to determine graduate and doctoral candidates’ knowledge of basic biomedical science concepts as they relate to situations and patient presentations encountered in clinical settings. They also show strong correlations with COMLEX-USA Level 1 performance, a national standardized licensure examination.
COMAT examinations report scaled scores via score equating, which allows COMs to compare their students’ performance with reference groups of their choice.
