About COMAT Nutrition in Patient Care
A strategic goal of the NBOME is to advance competency-based assessment in osteopathic medicine and related health care professions. In response to the growing national emphasis on demonstrable nutrition competency, the NBOME is developing COMAT Nutrition in Patient Care.
The new assessment series will provide osteopathic medical schools with a purpose-built tool to evaluate students’ nutrition knowledge and competencies and measure their progress toward effective application in patient care.
Assessing Nutrition Competencies to a National Standard
There is currently no dedicated, national standardized assessment to measure osteopathic medical students’ foundational and clinically relevant nutrition knowledge; COMAT Foundational Biomedical Sciences (FBS) Nutrition will be the first.
COMAT Nutrition will assess osteopathic medical students’ foundational and clinical nutritional knowledge and competencies. Consistent with the existing COMAT structure, the series will have two examinations: an FBS nutrition examination aligned with didactic education in OMS years 1 and 2; and a Clinical nutrition examination aligned with clinical education in OMS years 3 and 4.
The FBS Nutrition examination is scheduled to launch in August 2027, followed by the Clinical Nutrition examination in 2028.
Costs Associated with COMAT Nutrition in Patient Education
The anticipated fee is approximately $45 per student per examination. Final pricing and applicable agreement terms will be confirmed before launch.
