Selected Specific Learner-Centered Objectives for Obstetrics/Gynecology

The osteopathic medical student examinee will be required to demonstrate the ability to:

  1. Accurately diagnose and manage common medical and surgical issues in the field of OB/GYN.
  2. Conduct thorough patient history and physical examinations.
  3. Engage in effective shared decision-making with patients and their families.
  4. Recommend appropriate preventative care strategies.
  5. Evaluate and address social determinants of health.
  6. Engage in patient education, empowerment, and advocacy.
  7. Identify and manage somatic dysfunctions and viscerosomatic reflexes.
  8. Understand indications and contraindications for procedures used in OB/GYN practice.
  9. Coordinate care within an interdisciplinary health care team.

These objectives will include selected patient presentations and clinical situations involving but not limited to:

Community Health and Patient Presentation Related to Wellness: Issues of domestic violence and/or sexual assault and primary screening protocols and preventive strategies including mammography, Pap smears, vaccines, and genetic testing

Human Development, Reproduction, and Sexuality: Anomalies of the female reproductive system, family planning, infertility, puberty, menopause, and sexually transmitted infections

Endocrine System and Metabolism: Diabetes, pituitary disorders, polycystic ovary syndrome, and thyroid diseases

Nervous System and Mental Health: Anxiety and mood disorders, eating disorders, major depressive disorder, peripheral neuropathy, postpartum mental health disorders, and premenstrual syndrome/premenstrual dysphoric disorder

Musculoskeletal System: Carpal tunnel syndrome, low bone mass/osteoporosis, somatic dysfunction, and viscerosomatic relationships

Genitourinary/Renal System and Breasts: Benign breast diseases, benign cervical disorders, benign uterine and ovarian disorders, benign vulvar/vaginal disorders, pelvic masses, pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic pain, urinary and fecal incontinence, and urinary tract infections/disorders

Gastrointestinal System and Nutritional Health: Gastroesophageal reflux disease, hyperemesis gravidarum, vitamin absorption and supplementation, and weight management

Circulatory and Hematologic Systems (includes Oncology): Blood dyscrasias; cardiomyopathy; gestational trophoblastic disease; hypercoagulability; and malignant and pre-malignant conditions of the breast, vulva, vagina, cervix, ovaries, and uterus

Respiratory System: Acute respiratory distress syndrome, asthma, atelectasis, and COVID-19

Integumentary System: Benign dermatologic conditions of the vulva and hidradenitis suppurativa

Normal Obstetrics: Antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care; genetic counseling; lactation; maternal-fetal physiology; nutritional management in pregnancy; routine obstetrical surveillance; teratogens; and vaccine recommendations in pregnancy

Abnormal Obstetrics: Abnormal labor, bleeding during pregnancy and post-partum, ectopic pregnancy, medical complications in pregnancy, placental pathology, spontaneous abortions, and trauma in pregnancy
