Outreach to State Boards & Regulation Leaders: 2025 in Review

To help spread understanding of osteopathic distinctiveness and the COMLEX-USA credential, NBOME leadership met throughout the year with state licensing boards to provide updates, gather insights, and strengthen support. This work aligns with the “Enrich Mission-Aligned Partnerships” pillar of the NBOME Strategic Plan: Assessment Matters.

NBOME leaders, including President and CEO John R. Gimpel, DO, MEd; Board Chair Lori A. Kemper, DO, MS; Executive Vice President and Chief Assessment Officer Gretta A. Gross, DO, MEd; and General Counsel Doug Murray, Esq. met with multiple state boards throughout 2025 to provide updates on NBOME products and services. These state boards include the Osteopathic Medical Board of California, Florida Board of Osteopathic Medicine, New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners, New York State Board for Medicine, Oklahoma State Board of Osteopathic Examiners, and the Texas Medical Board.

Additionally, due to the distinctive nature of osteopathic medical education and practice, the NBOME will continue to strongly advocate for continued independent osteopathic medical boards in the states where they exist, including Nevada and Maine.

The NBOME also exhibits regularly at meetings and conferences that offer the opportunity to connect with representatives from state medical boards. In April, Murray attended the 2025 Administrators in Medicine Annual Meeting and the Federation of State Medical Boards’ (FSMB) 2025 Annual Meeting. Gimpel and Kemper also attended the FSMB meeting and presented updates on COMLEX-USA and the NBOME.

In September, Gimpel, Kemper, and Vice President for Professional Development Initiatives and Communications Jeanne M. Sandella, DO, attended the International Conference on Medical Regulation, organized by the International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities in Dublin, Ireland. At that conference, they presented on the Core Competency Capstone for DOs. Gross attended the Medical Council of Canada’s Annual Meeting in Ottawa, Ontario, hosted in October.
