NBOME National Faculty members contribute to latest edition of Foundations of Osteopathic Medicine

FOM5

The NBOME National Faculty is comprised of osteopathic physicians from across the country, representing undergraduate and graduate osteopathic medical education and practice.  Many of them contributed their expertise to the recently released fifth edition of the Foundations of Osteopathic Medicine (FOM5).

Since 1991, the FOM has served as a core educational resource, reflecting ongoing advances in osteopathic medicine and supporting curriculum alignment across colleges of osteopathic medicine.

This latest edition represents a nationwide, long‑term collaboration of experts in the field to deliver a unified curriculum that supports both instruction and assessment across all levels of osteopathic education. These changes reflect both the progression of osteopathic practice and the deep-rooted principles that define our distinctive profession.

Nearly 30 percent of FOM5 editors and contributors are involved with the NBOME, including positions as National Faculty, Board of Directors, and committee members.

National Faculty Chair of the COMAT examination in Osteopathic Principles and Practice & Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine Rebecca E. Giusti, DOKurt P. Heinking, DO, a member of the former Special Commission on Osteopathic Medical Licensure Assessment; and longstanding National Faculty member Kendi L. Hensel, DO, PhD, served as executive editors of the latest edition.

“It has been such a privilege to be a part of the 5th edition of the Foundations of Osteopathic Medicine! As a proud member of the AACOM Educational Council on Osteopathic Principles and one of its past Chairs, I greatly value the history of the ECOP and the NBOME,” said Giusti. “They have been intertwined in the growth of the osteopathic educational process and licensure and thus have been integral to the success of the profession.”

In addition, NBOME President and CEO John R. Gimpel, DO, MEd, co-authored a comprehensive chapter on the history of the osteopathic medical profession; former Item Writer of the Year recipient Regina K. Fleming, DO, served as a section editor; and Board Executive Committee member Sajid A. Surve, DO, co-authored a new chapter on performing arts medicine.

“The Foundations of Osteopathic Medicine is a seminal textbook for those studying to be osteopathic physicians, and I am proud to be a contributor,” said Gimpel. “That so many current and former members of the NBOME also contributed to this latest edition is a true testament to the expertise found among our Board and National Faculty members, and how our profession works together at alignment across the education, training, and practice continuum.”

“This book is of paramount importance as it serves as a foundation of both undergraduate and graduate medical education, as a primary reference for the NBOME’s licensure exams, and as a wealth of knowledge to the experienced osteopathic physician dedicated to life-long learning,” said Giusti. “It is dedicated to our patients who inspire us and push us to the highest standards of integrity and knowledge. Without them, this textbook would never have been possible.”

We celebrate and applaud the many NBOME National Faculty members and osteopathic physician leaders whose dedication and expertise made the fifth edition of Foundations of Osteopathic Medicine an indispensable learning resource and addition to the library for any DO or osteopathic medical student.
