ThE NBOME clArk AWArD fOr PATiENT ADvOcAcy
The NBOME Clark Award for Patient Advocacy was
inaugurated in December 2016 and presented to its
namesake, Gary R. Clark. The award recognizes
individuals that have demonstrated outstanding
commitment to patient safety, patient protection and
quality of care.
Gary R. Clark, a leader in physician licensure and
professional regulation at the state and national
levels, is only the second public member of the
NBOME Board of Directors. He served on the
NBOME Board and the Executive Committee with
distinction from 2007 through 2015, having retired
from the Oklahoma State Board of Osteopathic
Examiners in 2007 and acting as executive director
for state medical boards in Oklahoma and Missouri
for more than 30 years.
A strong advocate for the osteopathic medical
profession and for osteopathic physician licensure by
means of a distinctive competency examination
program, Mr. Clark served multiple terms on the
Board of Directors of the Federation of State Medical
Boards and was a member of the Board of Directors
and president of the Council of State Governments’
Gary R. Clark receives the inaugural NBOME Clark Award for
Clearinghouse on Licensure, Enforcement and
Patient Advocacy in December 2016 by Gary L. Slick, DO, MA,
Regulation. He was a founding member and past

president of Administrators in Medicine and a
volunteer executive director for the American
Association of Osteopathic Examiners.
Mr. Clark’s dedication to the quality of patient care
is the embodiment of the NBOME’s mission to
protect the public through competency assessment.
