Message From the President

John R. Gimpel, D.O., M.Ed., FACOFP, FAAFP
President and CEO
The National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME), founded in 1934, is an independent, nongovernmental, not-for-profit organization whose mission is to protect the public by providing the means to assess competencies for osteopathic medicine and related health care professions.

For more than three quarters of a century, the NBOME has been recognized for excellence in the national and the international arena of osteopathic physician testing and evaluation. The NBOME's Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX-USA) is the examination series universally accepted for osteopathic physician licensure in the United States, and also is recognized by physician licensing authorities in numerous international jurisdictions.

The NBOME Board of Directors is comprised of leading osteopathic physicians from around the United States, as well as two public (non-physician) members. The 21-member Board provides strategic direction to our highly dedicated professional staff, while the NBOME executive leadership team directs the talents and contributions of the more than 100 NBOME employees on a daily basis.

In addition, a diverse, highly qualified and dedicated National Faculty supports the NBOME's mission of protecting the public. Our National Faculty includes several hundred professionals from every region of the country who have expertise in the health professions, osteopathic medical practice, medical education and evaluation, and physician licensure and regulation.

Together, the NBOME National Faculty and NBOME staff perform the wide array of duties required for high quality test development and delivery, standard setting, continuous quality improvement, innovations in testing, and research initiatives.

In addition to the COMLEX-USA examination series, the NBOME develops and administers the COMAT series of achievement tests, the COMVEX examination for physician revalidation, and the COMSAE program for candidate self-assessment. The NBOME provides competency assessment services in partnership with specialty colleges and certification boards, and numerous health professions, including the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and the American Association of Physician Assistants (AAPA). Our Department of Continuous Professional Development and Innovations is a recognized leader in performance in practice assessment and improvement strategies for physicians, as well as other resources for osteopathic continuous certification and maintenance of licensure.

The NBOME works closely with key stakeholders to develop services and programs to meet their assessment needs. Among the groups with whom we work are the public and state medical and osteopathic medical licensing boards, osteopathic medical students and physicians in residency training, practicing physicians, medical educators and colleges of osteopathic medicine, residency program directors, national professional organizations, and the national and international testing and medical licensure communities.

Driven by a clear vision laid out by our Board of Directors, and supported by teamwork across the NBOME and with our partner organizations in the house of medicine, the NBOME has made great advances in development of new and existing competency assessment products and services. Our organization has realized these accomplishments with an unwavering commitment to our mission, and to our core values:

We believe that the quality of health care in the United States, and the interactions and services that patients receive each day will continue to benefit from our progress and collaboration, helping to solidify public trust in the medical profession as a whole.

We hope that you enjoy your visit to our website, and that you will return frequently to keep apprised of the activities of the NBOME.

Sincerely,
John R. Gimpel, D.O., M.Ed., FACOFP, FAAFP
